Tobacco was discovered in the 16th century by Europeans. Explorers, such as Christopher Columbus when visited North America they noticed that the American Indians, smoked tobacco.They thought that it could be a medical properties.

During those days, it was used in Indian ceremonies, such as smoking the pipe of peace. Jean Nicot, French ambassador to portugal, introduced it to his country, claiming that it could cure headaches. The tobacco plant was named nicotania after him, and the substance nicotine found in tobacco, also got name from him.

Now, Tobacco is known to be harmful to the health and smoking is discouraged, especially among younger generations.
